The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) held it’s Biennial General Meeting on Tuesday 26th of January 2016 at the Guyana Olympic House on High Street, Kingston and National Coach Gokarn Ramdhani was re-elected as President for another two-year term.
The President said 2015 was a most successful one compared to the past years with top player Narayan Ramdhani Ranked 102 at the World Juniors level at the close of 2015. The GBA’s Junior Team is ranked 39th in the World following the conclusion of the World Junior Championships held in Peru in November 2015.
The GUMDAC Open, Trophy Stall Age Group, Guyana Olympic Association Olympic Day Open, Guyana Classic International and the Woodpecker Products Age Group were tournaments run off by the GBA last year.
At the International level Guyanese teams attended the Pan American Games in Toronto Canada, Pan American Junior Championships in Mexico, Caribbean Regional Badminton Championships in Dominican Republic, Colombian International.
Ramdhani explained the Association still faces a lot of difficulties in getting a steady supply of feather shuttlecock which have to be used to train players for international tournaments. These shuttlecocks are very costly as up to ten or more can be used in matches.
“We are working towards getting a supplier but any help that can be given to us will be warmly accepted” Ramdhani disclosed. Ramdhani said the development programme for junior players is affected by after school lessons and this continues to be an ongoing problem which GBA has to try and solve.
The GBA thanked the National Sports Commission for allowing them the uses of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“Already we see our players training more intense as there are certain exercises that cannot be done on hard floors like the jump smashes and lounges. We can do better if we are given three days in a more organised way so that we can have a continuous programme as we are the only country at the moment that trains three times a week, compared six times a week,” Ramdhani noted.
The GBA is also happy that the NSC has included Badminton in the IGG Games. This will help with the development of Guyanese players since Suriname has a good standard. Guyana Olympic Association has made it possible for players to attend tournaments which gave them exposure and experience.
The Coach feels this was proven with Guyana’s latest 53rd ranking. The Student Athlete Scholarship Programme was one such instance where the players benefited. “We would also like to encourage parents to get their children involved in Sports as it helps them to be a well rounded persons” the GBA Head concluded.
The Management committee elected to serve from 2016-217: President – Gokarn Ramdhani, Vice President – Dr. Nicholas Waldron, Secretary – Emelia Ramdhani, Assistant Secretary – Ayanna Wickham-Watson, Treasurer – Darrell Carpenay, Assistant Treasurer – Marlon Chung, Committee Members – Ryan Chang, Gillian Mangra, Ernesto Choo-A-Fat.
