Yesterday Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan sitting in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court sentenced a
housekeeper to 18 months imprisonment, after she stole over $400,000 from the home of her employer before falsely reporting to police that bandits had broken into the premises.
Shondel Williams, 36, who lives at 59 Russell Street, Charlestown, admitted that on December 27, 2015 at 168 Durban Backlands, she stole three diamond stud earrings and $421,000 in cash from Gem Madhoo-Nascimento.
The Magistrate sentenced Williams to serve 18 months in prison for the crime.
Police Corporal Deniro Jones, the Prosecutor, told the court that the defendant worked as a maid for Nascimento. He said that on the day in question, Williams reported to police that someone had broken into the home situated at 168 Durban Backlands and stole the items mentioned in the charge.
The Prosecutor further related that when police ranks arrived they searched the premises and asked Williams basic questions, which she was reluctant to answer. According to Jones, the woman was observed by lawmen acting very nervously. It was then that police suspected the woman had something to do with the disappearance of the items.
Police ranks searched a bedroom Williams occupied in the house and found the diamond earrings in her purse along with a quantity of other jewellery. The complainant later identified the items as her belongings. .
When asked by the Magistrate if she had anything to say before sentencing Williams replied “No”. Magistrate McLennan subsequently told the woman that she was placed in a position of trust and it was expected of her to be honest.
An order was also made by the Magistrate for the stolen items lodged at the Police Station to be returned to Nascimento.
