Watched by a capacity crowd at the Area ‘H’ Ground, home team Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets (RHTG&G) led by man-of-the-match and the best batsman Clinton Pestano, made light work of Young Warriors trouncing them by a massive 171 runs to lift the title for the 2015 edition of the Busta Champion of Champions 40-overs cricket Tournament.
2015 BUSTA Champion of Champions winners Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets pose with Guyana Beverag Inc. CEO Robert Selman (2nd right) and Marketing Manager Shameeza Yadram, left.
In brilliant sunshine, RHTG&G which won the toss and elected to bat first got on their way with an opening stand of 34 between openers Khemraj Mahadeo and Delbert Hicks before Mahadeo was dismissed for 14 in the 5th over by medium pacer Seon Hetmeyer.
Hicks and Jason Sinclair then added 81 for the next wicket before Hicks was caught at the wicket off pacer Jermin Henry for an attractive 70 (8×4 2×6). Sinclair 33, Rajiv Ivan 42 (7×4) and Pestano 72 (4×4 4×6) all batted well to ensure that the home team reached an imposing 274 for 7 off their allotted 40 overs.
Pestano and Ivan added 81 for the 4th wicket off just 6.3 overs as the visitors bowling struggled for control on a good pitch and lighting fast outfield. Bowling for Young Warriors, Suresh Dhanai and Seon Hetmeyer both took two wickets each.
Needing an imposing 275 to win, Young Warriors were rocked in the first over bowled by Pestano, when national junior player Alex Algoo’s (0) middle stump was sent flying. West Indies Under-15 selectee Kevin Sinclair was then trapped LBW by pacer Keon Sinclair for 17 to leave his team at 20 for 2 in the 6th over.
The visitors never recovered and were eventually dismissed for 104 in 23.1 overs; only the impressive Waheid Edwards 41 and Suresh Dhanai 21 offered any resistance to a purposeful RHTG&G bowling attack.
Off spinner Eon Hooper 3 for 16, Keon Sinclair 3 for 21, Pestano 2 for 17 and Shawn Perriera 2 for 19 bowled well for the champions. At the presentation ceremony, RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster praised both teams for their example of discipline while underscoring the success of this, the 12th edition of the Tournament.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Management of the Guyana Beverage Inc. for their support over the years, especially General Manager Robert Selman and Marketing Manager Shameeza Yadram.
The RHTY&SC would continue to work hard to promote cricket across Guyana Foster noted. Selman in an emotional speech stated that the host club has represented the Busta brand well over the years noting that working with the club was always a privilege.
The outgoing General Manager, who would be retiring shortly noted that the tournament has made the Busta brand, a household name in Berbice and expressed his admiration of the club’s discipline and remarkable ability to successfully organise and host events.
The champions took home $100,000 and the beautiful Busta Cup while the runner up received $50,000.00 and trophy. Eon Hooper copped the best bowler award while Waheid Edwards and Suresh Dhanai received special prizes for their performance for Young Warriors.
