Balchand Baldeo was outstanding
National under-19 all-rounder Balchand Baldeo single-handedly led the mighty Albion Cricket Club to a massive eight wicket win over Port Mourant in the final of the Elizabeth Styles Under-19 Cricket Competition for
teams in Berbice.
The match, which was played last Saturday in hot sunshine at the historic Albion Sports Complex, saw Port Mourant winning the toss and taking first strike. The decision backfired as they lost early wickets and never recovered. Only Berbice youth player Dimitri Cameron with 26 offered any resistance against a quality all spin Albion attack ending on 127 all out. Berbice off spinner Daniel Lewis was the leading bowler with 3 for 18. He received solid support from national youth player Sharaz Ramcharran with 2 wickets for 4 runs, rising star David Latchaya 2 for 14 and another youth player Balchand Baldeo with 2 for 8.
In reply, Albion lost Adrian Sukhwa for 0 but that did not cause panic in their camp as Sharaz Ramcharran joined Baldeo before Ramcharran went for a well played 37. Baldeo ended on 71 not out to cap a good all-round performance, earning him the man of the match award. David Latchaya was unbeaten on 17 as the champions ended on 129 for 2.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the game, Vicky Bharosay, speaking on behalf of the Berbice Cricket Board, thanked Elizabeth Styles for their continued support and for staying the course with the BCB in very difficult times. He added that without their sponsorships and others, it would have been very difficult for the board to continue to fulfill its mandate and play cricket at all levels. He thanked Mr. Bissoondyal Singh for negotiating with Elizabeth Styles USA and for securing the sponsorship. Bharosay said that this competition played a great role in the continued success of Berbice cricket and even contributed to the success of Guyana under-19 team in the 2015 regional youth tournament.
Speaking on behalf of the sponsor, one of the distributors in Guyana and proprietor of Bissan’s Trading Mr. Bissoondyal Singh said that the sponsors are very much contented with the way the BCB has managed the tournament. Singh thanked the players for supporting the products manufactured by Elizabeth Styles and urged that they continue to do so. Elizabeth Styles has many distributors across the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, South America and Africa. The USA based company will be renewing this sponsorship for 2016.
