A New Amsterdam man who was on Thursday charged with attempt murder has been granted bail in the sum of $500,000.
Mark Bender, called ‘Tall Man’, 27 of Lot 54 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, had turned himself over to the police on Monday.
He was wanted for wounding Dwayne De Jonge, called “Buda,” 27, of 229 M&TC Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The incident occurred outside the Wah Lin Restaurant at Lot 49 Stanleytown.
Bender appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
The indictable charge stated that on Saturday January 16, at No. 49 Stanleytown, he stabbed Dwayne De Jonge.
The stabbing reportedly stemmed from a dispute the two men had some weeks ago over a woman. Bender had reportedly injured one of De Jonge’s friends during that brawl.
De Jonge allegedly ventured to the Stanleytown area and had encountered Bender and an argument ensued during which time Bender reportedly stabbed De Jonge multiple times.
The victim was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He was subsequently transferred to the ICU of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he received further medical attention. He remains hospitalised.
In addition to being granted bail the accused has to lodge his passport and report to the Central Police Station every Friday afternoon until the conclusion of the trial.
He is being represented by Attorney at Law Tanya Warren Clements.
The Prosecution’s case is being presented by Corporal Desire Pilgrim.
The matter will continue on February 17.
