The first ladies’ semi-finals of the Rebel Tennis Club Championship took an unexpected twist during the match-up between Cristy Campbell and Aretta Dey. Most persons had written off the unseeded Campbell against the consistent
number 1 seed, Aretta Dey. However, the viewers were left aghast when the dust settled and Campbell emerged victor.
When asked about the match that could be described as the biggest one in her four years of play, Campbell said, “Obviously it feels good to go out and win after being sidelined with various injuries for the entire 2015. My plan was to stick to my usual game and thankfully things went in my favour. Going into Sunday’s (today) final I intend to maintain my strategy which has worked thus far and just go out and have fun. There can only be one winner. Win or lose the year has started well for me. I’m working around the clock on my ankle and hopefully I’m in a better comfort zone come Sunday (today).”
The match was highlighted with long rallies and a test of mental toughness. It cannot be overstated the high level of fitness that goes into playing a 2 hours match, the longest of the women’s matches. Both women demonstrated that their matches can be as equally exciting and drew the largest amount of spectators. Campbell booked her first ladies’ finals with a 7/5, 6/1 win and faces the winner of yesterday’s second semi-finals between Carol Humphrey and Afruica Gentle. It is an impressive accomplishment for novice players who now transition and frequent the open draws.
The final match of the evening was contested between number 2 seed Leyland Leacock and Anthony Amerally in the quarterfinals. Amerally powered several remarkable aces which caught Leacock off-guard. However, the top seed was not to be deterred and went on to quickly wrap up his match 6/1, 6/1.
