The second semi final of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Derick Josiah Memorial knockout football competition will resume today at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground after being halted due to Banks DIH pulling out as sponsor under their Vita Malt Plus and Rainforest Water brands.
WDFA Secretary Adrian Giddings informed Kaieteur Sport that the competition had kicked off on Friday December 11 with Uitvlugt Warriors outplaying Bagotsville 4-0, while Pouderoyen got the better of Eagles United on penalty kicks after an exciting 1-1 stalemate.
The WDFA’s decision to accept an invitation to compete in the Stag Super XV1 three-association year end tournament that also involved East Bank and East Demerara Football Associations was apparently the reason Banks DIH decided to discontinue sponsorship even though the playing dates for the Stag Super XV1 were not clashing with the Josiah Memorial.
Despite being set back, the Executive of the WDFA was eager to complete the Derrick Josiah Memorial competition and approached Ansa McAl which readily agreed to chip in to ensure the tournament comes to a successful conclusion. The Guyana Police Force and the Trophy Stall are also on board as sponsors.
Competition today will see Den Amstel facing Uitvlugt in the second semi final from 15:30hrs, the winner will face Pouderoyen in the final next week. The opening match today, an exhibition, will feature Pouderoyen and Eagles United from 13:30hrs.
Young Achievers and Stewartville were both axed from the tournament for fielding ineligible players. The winning team will pocket $200,000 while the losing finalist will pocket $100,000. Third and fourth place will attract $50,000 and $25,000 respectively. Admission is $500.
