-Division 1 basketball title on the line
By Edison Jefford
Plaisance Guardians will guard against a publicly proclaim rampage from Colts tonight when the two teams
meet at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in the final of a best-of-three series for the first major basketball title in Georgetown for 2016 from 8pm.
The two improbable candidates will collide for the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division I League title in the third of what has been an exciting three-game series. They will no doubt produce a final classic for the crown tonight.
One point has separated game one in favour of Guardians and three points made the difference in game two for Colts. The same trend is expected to continue in what should be one of better finals in Georgetown since Colts played Pacesetters for the National Championship last February. That is an indication of how good the two teams have been.
Individually, guard Nikkoloi Smith has ignited an up-tempo brand of basketball in Plaisance that has made no room for ‘big men’ like Mark Richards. The team has relied heavily on their guards to push the ball up the court in a running offense that suits Smith.
Veteran guard, Enoch Mathews has fitted well into the Guardians offense as is Trenton Woolford and John Campbell. Whether this still emerging team can continue to stop the rampaging Colts is to be seen. Colts have committed to a blow-out tonight.
The Colts camp has said that they have changed their offence from the up-tempo form to a more slow-paced rotation that includes ‘big man’ sets for their national centre Shane Webster and Kurt ‘Gypsy’ Elias, which contrasts with Guardians style.
This is what makes the game tonight interesting: two emerging teams with two contrasting styles of basketball. This is what led to the closeness of the series thus far, and will continue to provide the entertainment.
Apart from the two ‘big men’, Elias and Webster, Colts are deep with guards Dave Causway and Shelroy Thomas capable of also playing up-tempo basketball. Kurt English has been a revelation for Colts, which is the more established club in this contest.
Apart from playing in the National Club Championship Final, which they lost last year, Colts are 2015 GABA Under-23 and Division I League champs, and Forbes Burnham Division I Memorial National Champions.
