Magistrate Leron Daly, sitting in the Providence Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday imposed a one-year jail sentence on a 20-year-old driver, after he was found guilty of causing the death of a pedal cyclist by dangerous driving.
Ryan Chetram of Lot 44 Supply Village, East Bank Demerara (EBD) drove motorcar PGG 569 in a manner dangerous to the public on July 3, 2013 and caused the death of Nicholas Lambelino.
The accident occurred on the Land of Canaan Public Road EBD.
Chetram’s trial began on November 25, last. He had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $300,000 bail. He was represented by Attorney, Leslie Sobers.
The prosecution led by Police Inspector, Michael Grant, contended that on the fateful day, Chetram was driving the motorcar at a fast rate north along the Land of Canaan Public Road.
According to the Prosecutor, Chetram subsequently lost control of the vehicle and collided with Lambelino.
Lambelino was picked up in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital.
Six witnesses testified on behalf of the prosecution.
