The motor vessel (MV) Kimbia which was docked at the Guyana National Industrial Company’s (GNIC’s) shipyard in November for repairs and restoration, will soon be back in operation as works are 90 percent complete.
The MV Kimbia is one of two vessels which provide service to passengers travelling to and from the North West District, Region One. The other vessel, Lady Northcote, recently re-commenced operations and has since made several trips to the region.
Marclene Merchant, General Manager of Transport & Harbours Department (T&HD) in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that MV Kimbia will provide a much more efficient service when it re-starts operations.
Passengers using its services to and from the North West District will benefit from reduced journey time and improved facilities onboard.
Merchant explained that, “Works were executed to the superstructure; plates were changed in the hull, the propeller, shaft and rudder along with other under water fittings; and the interior of the vessel such as cabins, gallery and cargo wench.”
In addition, Dwayne Griffith, Chief Mechanical Engineer of T&HD said that the fabrication of metal replacements is just about complete. However there were small variations to be done to the water line, key plating by the rudder and a section in the fuel tank.
The additional works to the hull will ensure the necessary safety features are all active to allow the vessel to function more efficiently in terms of journey time and fuel consumption. Griffith pointed out that extra works will be completed on the engine and other parts of the vessel including the hull.
Victor Reid, Project Manager, T&HD explained, “The hull is divided into tanks; we had encountered some holes in these tanks which will be addressed… The tanks are a safety mechanism as in the event there is a breach in the hull, the water will be contained in the tanks which will prevent the boat from sinking.
Additional works which were not a part of the initial contract are currently underway and are almost complete, Reid explained.
The sum of $107M is being expended to execute rehabilitation and repair works to MV Kimbia, however, extra works will cost $61M more which is to be approved by Cabinet.
