Dear Editor,
Politics is largely about perception and justice is about fairness and transparency. Principles and ethics should always be the moral compass of elected officials because they should be held to higher standards. However, this was not the case with the Honorable Prime Minister on his recent visit to New York. As a seasoned politician, the Prime Minister is undoubtedly aware that perception, though not necessarily always based on fact, has a strange way of becoming truth. Guyanese, by nature, are fair-minded. In any dispute, they tend to side with and be sympathetic to the party which seems to be at a disadvantage. This is a fact that cannot be overlooked.
Since in office, the government has faced enormous challenges head on, respected the rights of the citizens and put the country and people first with the ultimate purpose to faithfully serve all the people of the country and not only its constituency. When the Prime Minister was in opposition, he was very critical of the leaders of the PPP government on their visits to New York where they had only invited PPP groups and members to attend their meetings. Lest we forget, it was the Prime Minister who had rebuked the leaders of the PPP for not representing all the people of Guyana, but only the PPP on their trips abroad. Not only had he accused them of breaching protocol but also for using the taxpayers’ money to promote the interests of the PPP only.
How the Prime Minister can accused the leaders of the PPP of breaching protocol on their visits to New York and has done exactly the same thing on his visit? His recent visit to New York, whether paid or not paid by the taxpayers, should be representative of all the people of Guyana and not only a handful of members of the AFC. His activities should have been coordinated by members of the Guyana Consulate and not the AFC NY/NJ Chapter with only four members.
The Prime Minister did not seize the initiative and set a conciliatory tone and extend an olive branch to members of the PPP. His actions seem to have plunged a dagger into the hearts of the non AFC diaspora members. Understanding the intricacies of politics always requires a level of open-mindedness which none of the members of the AFC NY/NJ chapter is endowed with; because they have only been taught how to practice revenge and spiteful politics by their leader. This is the same way the AFC treat its youths in Guyana who are abandoning them for APNU.
The Prime Minister has lost much credibility because of his partisan actions on this visit. For him to preach unity at home and not practice it abroad is politically inconsistent. His actions have served as a poor role model for the youths. Which begs the question: How the government can allow its politics to descend into a one party partisan affair at a time when it is seeking unity with the PPP? This precedent would only widen the division that already existed in Guyana.
Asquith Rose.
