Police were up to late last night hunting for a Zeelugt New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo man who fled into a bushy area after drowning his wife in a trench in the community.
The woman, who was still unidentified at press time, was found in the trench several minutes after the suspect dragged, beat and submerged her there.
The killing is said to have stemmed from allegations of infidelity.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect had assaulted her on Wednesday.
According to reports, at around 19.00 hrs, residents living near the Zeelugt public road saw the man suddenly grab his spouse and begin punching her. When some residents attempted to go to her rescue, the suspect jumped into a nearby trench with his wife and continued his brutal assault.
He then swam to the eastern end of the trench and fled into a bushy area.
The residents became further alarmed when they checked in the trench and saw no sign of the woman.
Ranks from the Leonora Police Station were summoned and residents assisted them in searching for the victim, whose body was eventually pulled from the trench.
The corpse was taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home.
She is the fourth woman to be slain for the year.
