-Petra Organisation donates two goals to Education Ministry
Facing the increasing scourge of suicide, the Petra Organisation in collaboration with the Public Health Ministry have agreed to use several methods to sensitise participants in this year’s Milo Under-20 Schools Football Competition on an issue that has gripped the attention of most Guyanese.
Yesterday, during the release of fixtures and the rules that will govern the tournament, representative of the Health Ministry Dr. Dennis Bassier in addressing the gathering of players and teachers at the Ministry of Education ground, spoke of the involvement of the entity.
According to Dr. Bassier, a number of motivational quotes will be given to the captains of each team to be read shortly before the start of play.
Additionally, the Organisers have proposed that a Workshop be held which will help to inform teachers about the techniques that could be used to identify those who might be susceptible to taking such actions.
He added that the slogan for the competition should be ‘Life is worth living so let us kick it together’.
Dr. Bassier lauded the efforts of the Petra Organisation in staging a tournament that serves to highlight the raw talent of young players, while adding that physical and mental skills are developed over the duration of the competition.
Nicholas Fraser of the Ministry of Education in his remarks said he was indeed heartened by the fact that siucide will be highlighted during the tournament, especially with the national attention it is getting right now and offered the Organisers full fledged assistance in whatever areas they may request.
Also present at the occasion were Petra Directors Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole who presented the Ministry with two complete goals.
Mendonca reported that the age of eligibility to participate in the tournament is players born on or before January 1, 1996.
