Two more girls have been added to the list of reported underage pregnancies coming out of Region One within the last few weeks. The girls who are said to be 11 and 15 years old were brought to the city following intervention by health and social workers.
Kaieteur News understands that the 15-year-old from Baramita, had already given birth. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC) for a medical check-up after she arrived in the city, on Monday. However this newspaper has learnt that the teen and her baby have since left GPHC. No one from the institution has seen her since Monday night.
The other girl is currently under the supervision of workers at the institution. Last week two pregnant girls (11 and 12 years old) were reportedly rescued by members of the Guyana Women Miners Organistaion.
The girls, also from Region One, were taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital following their removal from communities in the Region. The victims (cousins) were said to be anemic when they were brought to the hospital for medical care and examination.
Kaieteur News had learnt that the two girls were both impregnated by adults from their villages. One of the men is a relative of both victims. The pregnant girls were brought to the city, where they remain under the care and supervision of officials of the Ministry of Social Protection Childcare & Protection Agency, (CPA), and the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs.
The 11-year-old has since given to a baby girl. The mother and her baby remain patients of the GPHC’s Maternity Unit. The 12-year-old is five months pregnant and also a patient of the medical institution.
The CPA is investigating cases of underage pregnancies.
