Dear Editor,
Sometime ago, the PPP/C government and the Region 5 administration wickedly dismantled and removed two bridges across the Bellamy Canal in the villages of Calcutta and Catherine, Mahaicony. The
Bridges were providing linkages between the residential areas in the villages and the area immediately south of the seashore, a distance about half a mile in length. My information is that the bridges were taken to Goodfaith and Novar, Mahaicony to provide access
across the said canal in those areas. Many view this as an act of raw, unadulterated discrimination on the government part .People were forced to abandon their farming and livestock activities north of the canal at Calcutta and Catherineville. Even picnic to the beach in the villages have ceased, resulting from lack of access.
The absence of infrastructure has not prevented people from venturing to build their homesteads north of the canal. The inadequacy of house lots has led to this, which is a good sign for population spread and development. Mr. Editor, I humbly and passionately make a plea to the government and Region 5 administration: please end the plight of the people of Calcutta and Catherine, Mahaicony by making provision in the 2016 bridge estimates for reconstruction of the two (2) bridges to spur the spread of development.
I. R. Chester
