under floodlights.
The well-intentioned occasion was slow out the blocks owed to a late start, locked venue that left some participating clubs waiting at the gate. When they gained entry, another delay ensued to get the northern lights on while the athletes waited to compete.
When things finally got going around 6:45pm, the most notable feature was the number of fresh faces that were beaming around the venue. When Kaieteur Sport inquired, we were told the AAG has selected an elite squad from the National Schools’ Championships.
However, that aside, the usual prodigies were at their best; quarter miler, Avon Samuels defeated Natricia Hopper in the Women’s 600 metres. Samuels clocked 1:35.9 seconds and Hooper 1:36.7 seconds in another of their many epic rivalries. Kezre Murray (1:42.9s) was third.
Samuel Lynch ran 1: 21.1 over 600m in the Under-18 category. Nigel Gonsalves finished second in 1:21.9 while Kareem Purch (1:23.4) was third.
Natrena Hooper won the triple jump with a leap of 12.19m ahead of sister, Natricia, who jumped 11.94m for second. Linden’s long jump phenom, Chantoba Bright was third with a leap of 11.80 metres.
Julio Sinclair threw 38.76m to win the Shot Putt Men. Leon Spelling was second with a throw of 36.22m.
The multi-talented Emmanuel Archibald, who is more known on the basketball court, ran 8.8s to win the 80m. Linton Mentis and Morris Gibson clocked 8.9s for joint second.
Natrena Hooper was the fastest female of the night over the 150m distance with a time of 16.7s. Kenisha Phillips ran 17.7s over the same distance for the second fastest time.
Linden’s Compton Caesar and Davin Fraser were the fastest men over 300m, both clocking 33.3 seconds.
