Dear Editor,
Stabroek News and Kaieteur News are the two newspapers that I read. There was a single acquaintance with the newest private operator since its arrival a few years back. It was while waiting at a barber’s shop. And now there is this damning story involving the Prime Minister and his office.
Abusive? Divisive? Coercive?Subversive? I think that it encompasses all of this and more. The messages are subtle, but piercingly eye-popping. Mischief of a nuanced strain is afoot. It reduces the Prime Minister’s office to a weak laughable symbolism, and renders the Prime Minister himself insignificant, if not altogether powerless and meaningless. Then there is the surrounding pointed political and racial coloration. Look who reports to whom! Observe how it seeks to drive a wedge and rent the coalition. This is the Achilles heel to be gnawed at, and torn, and shredded.
Further, think of the uncertainties and fears rekindled in the breasts of the tentative, the hopeful, and the conciliatory. And then ponder the solidifying of all the hoary crippling sicknesses that have imperiled, and continue to menace. Message delivered. Damage done. Think about this, comrades! Next stop….?
Scoop journalism or representative of the repulsive in all of its calculating grotesqueness? Take your pick. Here is revisited the sliminess of a disturbing disastrous epoch. Irresponsible is not the word; immoral is more accurate, given the objectives and the invisible hands.
For those who question and criticize severely this Government (sometimes rightly so), there should be an unflinching steely-eyed gaze at this news article, this paper, this not so clandestine cabal of movers, this insidious conglomerate of political commerce. It shields and then unsheathes sword to lunge and thrust savagely forward in the megalomaniac lust for power at all cost, and by any sordid means at hand.
A really vengeful, housecleaning administration would have moved in the eight months of its life: pressuring, marginalizing, harassing, and strangling out of existence, given the history, associations, dour perversities, and the crude lavish profiteering. But yellow rag, and extended business empire, is running unimpeded. There were reports of a drug contract the other day. Nothing of substance has changed. There has been no targeting, no disruption, no suffocating. It has been business as usual there, including this despicable incident of provocative reaching journalism.
It reiterates that certain known disharmonies are alive and flourishing in this country. These disharmonies cannot be allowed to diminish or dissipate into the thinness of unconcern and non-resistance; but must be instigated and agitated in the minds and bowels of the faithful listening, and reading, and watching. And the fragile, as well as the undecided, too!
Notwithstanding the sharp circumstances, I urge the Government to leave matters and presence alone. Call it democracy in action, tolerance at work, with a hard departure from the recriminatory and vindictive. Give rope, and enough of it. Without fail, the usual follows.
