3rd Anamayah Memorial Basketball competition – Berbice
Fyrish Black Sharks began the third edition of the annual Anamayah Memorial Basketball competition in enterprising fashion as they handed new comers Rose Hall Town a hard fought come from behind defeat last
Sunday 62-57 at the Fyrish basketball court.
The tough contest saw the Rose Hall Town boys taking to the court like seasoned campaigners as they led the more well-known Black Shark 14-09 at the end of the first segment.
The Rose Hall Town team was able to hold their composure as they continued to lead at the end of the first half with the score being 27-35. The Black Sharks come out for the second half a rejuvenated bunch and with home crowd support, they began to fight back to trail by one point at the end of the third quarter with the score reading 41-42.
The final segment saw the Black Sharks finding their range with frequent offensive plays as Rose Hall wilted under the pressure to concede the lead for the first time in the game as the Sharks eventually won 62-57.
For the Black Sharks, Lyndon Joseph led the way 20 points, while Real Franklyn with 11 and Tafawa Cort with 10 points supported well.
For the Rose Hall Town team, Kevon Wiggins with a game high 21 points led the fight with Osafo Profit 9 and Perry Cort 5 supporting in a losing cause.
Eight teams which have been divided into two groups have entered to be a part of this year’s competition.
The teams down to play are – Group ‘A’:- Rose Hall Town Jammers, Fyrish Black Sharks, East Canje Knights and new comers Rose Hall Town.
Group ‘B’:- New Amsterdam Warriors, Smithfield Rockers, Ithaca Hardliners and Hopetown Stealers.
The tournament will be played on a round robin basis with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinal round. At stake in the competition will be cash and other incentives for the winning and runner-up teams and other outstanding players.
The tournament is being organised by sport enthusiast Vibert Garnett. Jammers are the defending champions.
The competition is expected to continue on Sunday when Ithaca Hardliners and Hopetown Stealers clash at the Ithaca basketball court, West Bank Berbice. (Samuel Whyte)
