Balram Collins, 39, of Lot 35 Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice, was on Friday remanded to jail by Magistrate Rhondell Weaver when he appeared before her at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s court.
He was charged with assaulting his wife, Ashwanie Barran, called Rachelle on Thursday 7th January 2016 at their home.
Prosecutor Corporal Rochell Mars told the court that the accused is always in the habit of assaulting the woman.
He said that the woman recently returned from an overseas trip when the abuse became worse. He kept accusing her of “going away” to take man, the Prosecutor said.
About 09:00hrs on the day in question, Collins and Barran were at home when the man began to abuse the woman accusing her of infidelity. Collins subsequently picked up a piece of wood and lashed Barran about her body. He then ripped her clothes, the court heard.
The abuse was not done yet. The accused grabbed a cutlass and placed it to Barran’s neck and threatened to kill her.
The matter was reported and he (Collins) was arrested and charged. In court he pleaded not guilty and was remanded to jail.
