A Task Force set up by the Police Traffic Department continues its crackdown on errant motorists, especially those who are inclined to drink and drive.
The Task Force which is made up of ranks from Traffic Headquarters, Eve Leary, continues to rack up dozens of traffic cases, especially at weekends when motorists tend to indulge in excesses.
The work of the Task Force, in collaboration with traffic ranks in some Police Divisions, has been credited with the reduction in fatal accidents.
Traffic Chief Dion Moore told this newspaper yesterday that the Task Force was set up back in September in response to the increase in fatal accidents by mid last year.
He said that working along with the force administration, he devised a plan to deal with the main causes of accidents, such as speeding, use of cell phones while driving, breach of traffic light signals and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Task Force, under the supervision of Sergeant December, operates in four Police Divisions: A, B, C and D, primarily at weekends.
“They are doing a good job. They do not remain in one Division,” the Traffic Chief said.
He noted that most of the task force’s work is done on the weekends, since “a lot of people drink at that time.”
Kaieteur News understands that the Task Force accounts for close to 100 cases every weekend.
On Sunday night this newspaper observed members of the task force carrying out their operation on the Rupert Craig Highway, targeting mainly seawall revelers.
“A look at the statistics will show that during the week there is a decrease in accidents caused by drunk driving. This situation changes at weekends, when people tend to imbibe more,” Traffic Chief Moore said.
