Dear Editor,
“Judge not lest ye be judged; leave all judgment, unto God”! In as much as I hold most religious leaders in “high esteem” and do enjoy almost on a daily basis, the religious Christian programmes on local radio of my favourites Pastor: Calvin Haywood- Central Baptist Church leads the way, followed by Pastor John Smith- Central Assemblies and Pastor Joel Osteen. Since the topics vary on various aspects of life, at the end of the day, it provides me with a great source of inspiration and spiritual enlightenment/upliftment through Jesus the Christ. However, I still support the notion of Pope Francis “One can be spiritual, but not religious” Editor, while I do not consider myself to be religious, as it relates to “church going” yet still, I strive for spirituality, through doing a good deed daily in service to humanity. As a consequence, I find it extremely reprehensible and distasteful the utterances of Pastor Wendell P Jeffrey, in the publication of a letter captioned “Murder rate should give those pushing for marijuana legalization pause for thought”( S.N: 12.01.16.). By the way is this the same individual, who intends to contest the local government poll? (K.N. 12.01.16). In dealing with the latter Pastor, would it be prudent for me to highlight your inefficiencies, towards ensuring you are not elected as a councilor, within the constituency? Do you have a manifesto towards better serving humanity, if elected?
Meanwhile, in offering no scientific data, biblical excerpts/quotations to substantiate your claims, can it be construed, you are “clutching at straws”? As it’s written in the scriptures “lust, greed, envy and covetousness” which have a stranglehold in our society today, the works of Satan and Ungodliness are the primary reasons for the upsurge in crime. Is Pastor Jeffrey realistic? Surely, this man of cloth and purported holiness, at best is misleading, since the issues on hand as they relate to marijuana is legislation and not legalization – “Repealing the draconian 3 years mandatory jail sentence for a mere spliff, or a seed from the plant”. Why can’t a faculty from U.G, in collaboration with I.A.S.T, conduct an extensive research for medicinal purposes? “Woe be unto the pastors that leads my sheep astray”
That pastor Jeffrey, in his infinite wisdom and tunnel vision fails to offer a practicable solution to the affected victims, through counseling and prayers. Within his church, does it offer counseling to persons afflicted by trauma, shock, rape, torture and heinous crime? What of youth interaction, for the unfortunate in parental abuse, single parenthood and sexual molestation? Where is Pastor Jeffrey’s church located? Is it an affiliate of the Guyana Council of Churches, if the body is still active? Are his views expressed as expressed by him reflective of the church’s collective will or his personally? With no circumstantial or supportive evidence to substantiate his claims of the “murder rate” being interlocked in ganga usage (misconception), since there is a significant difference between God’s creation, “marijuanna” and manufactured cocaine, through chemicalization.
Apart, from an apology forthcoming, a timely reminder “open confession is good for the soul” With the two, marijuana and cocaine offering no similarity, or can they be equated. In the final analysis, Pastor Jeffrey’s letter, apart from being misguided, misinformed and riddled with inaccuracies, is a clear indication of suppression, albeit “contrite to the spirit, said the lord” in accordance with Pope Francis; “some of the worst deeds in the world were done in God’s name”. Is Pastor Jeffrey’s publication of his letter to be considered by Guyanese? Since the scourge of suicide, which makes our native land, as having one of the highest rates in the world, is Jeffrey overlooking this? Is Pastor Jeffrey a graduate in theology? In choosing the lesser of the two evils would the aspiring councilor, if approved endorse ‘repealing the draconian sentencing or same sex marriage? While for a spliff/joint, three years is meted out. In actuality, is the purported “man of God” suggesting an unjust and wicked system, defying godliness? So too is the unfairness, within the judicial system, that enables an individual to secure bail for possession of 150 kilograms of cocaine.
