The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) kicked off its 2016 volleyball season last Saturday with the staging of the Ashwell “Pumpkin” Mohabir Open, one day volleyball competition at the Blairmont No2 ground, West Bank Berbice.
The competition, which was for teams in the Ancient County, was won by the improving Port Mourant Jaguars who upstaged pre tournament favourites PMTC NO1 team 30 to 27 in a hard fought game which saw the lead changing hands consistently. However, it was the hungrier Jaguars that were able to dig deeper as they continuously stalked their opponents until they succumbed at 30-27 to take the coveted the first prize and trophy. The PMTC No two squad outlasted Three Door strikers of D’Edward to take third place.
Seven teams participated in that segment of the competition which also saw play among the juniors and females.
The winning Jaguars team received the first place trophy and incentive, while PMTC 1 collected a trophy, for placing third PMTC 2 also received a trophy.
The individual category saw Satesh Seenauth of the Port Mourant Jaguars being adjudged the best setter with the best spiker and MVP awards going to Surendra Motipersaud also of Port Mourant Jaguars.
In the junior male category, the #53 Survivors took top honours from PMTC No3 in another close encounter 15 points to 14 points after the two emerged tops in their round robin segment. The No 53 Survivors collected the first place trophy and an incentive. Andy Rohoman was adjudged the most valuable player.
Two teams participated in the female segment. Team one were the winners as they edged team two 20 points to 19 points. They received a trophy. Alicia Welcome of Skeldon Line Path was adjudged the MVP and received a trophy for her outstanding showing.
Meanwhile, the first leg of the male and female U19 trials for the BVA selection was attended by 22 males and 9 females. The trials were held at the Port Mourant Community centre on Sunday January 10th.
The BVA activities are slated to continue today and Sunday with a referees seminar/workshop which will be held at the Port Mourant Community Centre beginning at 09:00 hrs. (Samuel Whyte)
