Team to land in Texas early for pre-match sessions
By Franklin Wilson
With just under one month to go before Guyana’s Lady Jags challenge for a spot at the Olympics later this
year in Brazil, unflinching attention is set towards the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship set for Texas, USA, next month.
The Lady Jags have been drawn in Group B which will be played at the BBVA Campus Stadium with the Guyanese taking on CONCACAF powerhouse Canada in their first match on February 11, the main event on the double header card which will see the other teams in the group, Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala competing in the opener.
Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde has been singing the praises of the Lady Jags who have all given yeomen service to this nation over the years and continues to do so.
Forde, who recently took over the helm of the federation, reflected on the recent one week training camp that was held in Canada, noting that it was tremendous judging from the feedback he would have received from the Technical staff.
“From that feedback, they are ready to “ROAR” with deafening might…! The team will be heading to Texas a few days early to get in some pre-match sessions and that may have to suffice.”
Head Coach Mark Rodrigues and his charges have always said that they are well aware of the challenges faced when it comes to being adequately funded for friendly matches and more time for preparation, noting that the programme has always adopted to suit the local challenge.
Forde who is presently representing the federation along with Vice President Jullian Lovell at the Caribbean Football Union General Meeting and Men’s Championship Draw in Antigua and Barbuda, further stated that Guyana’s most successful team exemplify commitment, patriotism and sacrifice.
“Their consistent sound performances on and off the field of play is a commanding challenge to every football administrator in Guyana to get the business of women football moving. We have to work much harder at connecting the business and Governmental interest in the overall need for football development support.”
The team including Technical Staff will touch down in Texas on February 6, ahead of the first match on the 11th against Canada. The focus then will be on tactical and in squad competition to get the ladies back into full game mode for the match that they are eagerly awaiting.
