Smiling, waving and even showing journalists their middle fingers, 24-year-old Rooplall Abrahim and 18-year-old Gocoul Madanpaul appeared in the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for the murder of 49-year-old Anita Baichan, whom they allegedly tied and left to die in her burning house after they had set the building on fire.
Abrahim, called ‘Vijai’, of Murphy Dam, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice; and Gocoul Madanpaul, called ‘Clown’, of Bath Settlement, were remanded after appearing before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver.
They are to return to court on February 3.
Madanpaul had appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with Nazamadeen Raffick, who is also 18, for the murders of Arthur Rajkumar, 81, and his reputed wife, Dianne Chamanlall.
The couple, who owned a grocery store and beer garden, was beaten and chopped in their Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice home between January 8 and January 9, 2016.
Abrahim, who was captured on Tuesday on the Number Four, West Berbice foreshore, is likely to be charged with the murder of Rajkumar and Chamanlall.
Magistrate Weaver gave the police up to February 3 to adjust the charges accordingly and thus include Abrahim as the third person to be charged for the Bush Lot murders.
Abrahim told Magistrate Weaver that he was a fisherman. He also said that he was married and was a father of four.
The case for the prosecution, as presented by Corporal Rochelle Mars, is that Abrahim and Madanpaul, between Sunday January 3 and Monday January 4, 2016, at Plantation Hope, West Coast Berbice, murdered Anita Baichan in the course of committing arson at a dwelling house.
The intruders had tied Mrs. Baichan and her son, Moshim Khan, 28, before setting the property alight, but the son managed to escape.
During yesterday’s court appearance, Abrahim and Gocoul were seen smiling and laughing and waving to the few relatives who gathered.
They told relatives not to be bothered because they will be back soon. The men even showed their middle fingers to the media, as well as victory signs.
Abrahim was 16 when he was previously charged with the murder of Kavita Panday, 13, whose body was found in a canal at the back of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, on September 8, 2008. Indications from the postmortem indicated that the girl was submerged, while still alive, in the canal. He was freed of that murder in September, 2011.
