Approximately one month following the culmination of the ‘Back to the Future’ Caribbean Development tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), the officials of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA)
continues to expose their charges to international competition when a three man team traveled to neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago to participate in a one night Goodwill tournament last Tuesday evening.
The bouts were held at ‘The Castle,’ home of former West Indies batsman Brian Lara, under the auspices of the T&T Amateur Boxing Association in collaboration with LAY Management Group and the Pearl and Bunty Lara Foundation. The Guyanese boxers did not fare well and all three returned home empty handed after losing their respective bouts.
Coach of the team, Gregory Cort, said that lightweight pugilist, Joel Williamson, lost unanimously to Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Michael Alexander while his compatriot, Jamal Eastman lost out to another Trinidadian, Anthony Joseph in their bantamweight encounter. The other boxer, Deshawn Elcock, suffered a TKO loss to Joseph Parris after his handlers threw in the towel to end the featherweight encounter.
Meanwhile, a report emanating from Trinidad and Tobago revealed that Lara has hosted countless events over the years, but in a short address following the fight card he stated that the boxing event was the most satisfying. “I have a Carnival fete and many other events at my house, but the most pleasing event I have ever had was tonight (Tuesday).”
The former left-handed West Indies cricketer said he got the idea to host the event after attending Tuesday Night Boxing at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. “I was at Hugh Hefner’s house for Tuesday Night Boxing and I thought it was a great idea. To host them (boxers) here tonight is an amazing accomplishment.”
Six bouts were on the cards five men and one female fight which saw Martha Rodney losing to Rachelle Williams by unanimous decision. The Guyanese entourage returned home on Wednesday.
