Last year, 39,987 patients were seen at the Cheddi Jagan Dental Center. Of these, 85 underwent maxillofacial surgeries.
Maxillofacial is the area of surgery that deals with problems of the face, head,
neck, jaw and sinuses.
During the Ministry of Public Health’s end of year press conference, it was noted that the country’s main dental centre has done a total of 21,508 extractions and 7,016 fillings.
The number of prophylaxis done was 4,763. Periodontal (gum) cases were 195.
On Monday, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton visited the dental centre and interacted with several patients and staffers.
At the end of the visit, the Minister said that he was impressed with the improvement in terms of the services being offered at the health facility.
According to the Minister, the visit was a part of a tour he started early this year to various health institutions, to get a firsthand view of the functions and procedures being carried out at the various facilities.
“I am quite impressed and as I said, credit must be given where credit is due,” Dr. Norton stated.
He said that for this year, the Ministry will support training which is taking place at the center annually.
“The students are from the outskirts and that is the push we want to do and I will do everything to accommodate these students,” the Minister pointed out.
He said that the centre is currently offering a two-year programme to two foreigners. “Our health system is not bad given that foreign students are here.” The centre has 13 new complete dental units.
