David Godfrey Johnson called ‘Red Man’ was yesterday sentenced to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend, Leonaka Natasha Johnson.
The sentence was imposed by Justice Navindra Singh at the Georgetown High Court, yesterday.
Johnson, 27, was initially charged with murder, but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. According to the indictment, Johnson committed the act sometime between March 14 and 17, 2012. The victim’s body was found in drain a short distance away from the couple’s residence at Nismes, West Bank Demerara, on March 17, 2012.
The woman is said to have died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning, compounded by multiple blunt traumas. Reports indicated that the couple had shared a four-year relationship, prior to the killing. Johnson, who was arrested and charged sometime after the incident, is said to have been on remand for murder for some four years.
During his first appearance at the High Court yesterday, Johnson opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. The Judge enquired of the prisoner whether he had been forced, offered any inducement, taken any medication or consulted with his counsel, prior to entering the guilty plea. Based on the man’s response, Justice Singh proceeded to sentence him to life for killing his lover.
It is understood that a life sentence can be equivalent to least 15 years in jail. In such cases, the time which the offender spent in prison on remand, prior to his plea, is also deducted from the sentence.
Before leaving the courtroom, Johnson was urged by the Judge to use his time in prison constructively, that he could make a meaningful contribution to society.
