Essequibians have formed an area board to administrate Softball cricket in the county. The board, which has representation from all areas, will be affiliated to the Guyana Softball League.
The body which was long overdue, has as its first task to regularize softball cricket in the Cinderella County and to ensure that areas and teams are structured in order to have continuity. The first tournament will be in collaboration with the Guyana Softball League and the Regional Democratic Council of Region 2 and is the Essequibo Challenge Cup which will be held on Saturday 16th January, 2016 and will see all the areas represented as 8 matches are slated for that day.
The body will be led by Mr. Travis Simon of the Wild Oats Sports Club who was elected as the president to serve for the period 2016 -2017. The others elected are: Vice – President – Anil Durga (United Brothers); Secretary- Elroy Stephney (Ravens); Treasurer – Ekkie Persaud (Wild Oats Sports Club);Asst Sec/Treasurer- Sherman Austin – (Jacklow); PRO-Dasroy Balgobin (Jib); Memebers – Latchmikant Narine (Ravens); Nazir Khan (Cotton Field); Thakur Samlall (Shawn XI).
The board will examine the other sub committees and also name its two representatives on the Guyana Softball League Board at its next meeting to be held shortly. The Guyana Softball League has extended its congratulations to Mr. Travis Simon and his team and looks forward to working assiduously to ensure that respect and glory come back to Softball Cricket in Essequibo. Mr. Simon also expressed confidence in his team as they have been involved in softball cricket for a number of years. He also extended his call for all representatives of areas in Essequibo to come on board to build and solidify the game in Essequibo.
