Jan 13, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
I would like to thank Mr. Benjamin for his article dated January 8 2016 and for his understanding of the need for support for me personally and for others in this profession. I would, however, like to clarify some of the issues he raised with a view to factuality and accuracy.
First, I have always considered myself to be a Guyanese boxer, and have always presented myself as such. My patriotism is without question and although I had chosen to live and work at my second profession, plumbing, in the Caribbean, this was to take care of my family in a way I could not do in Guyana.
I have always raised the country’s flag whenever and wherever I have fought and my entire intention in pursuing this career was to continue the proud traditions of boxing excellence that this country is known for. Mr. Benjamin indicated in the article that I was being punished by the Mexican Johnny Gonsalves and that was the reason for stopping the fight. This is in fact not accurate since the fight was stopped because the Mexican got cut over the eye and the referee decided to stop the fight.
The statement that I had three brutal KOs may be viewed to suggest that I had been knocked out in the three fights when in fact those fights were stopped for reasons of injury. In the Australian instance the referee felt, in his opinion that I had had enough. Not having had communication with Mr. Benjamin since the article was written, I would like to express much appreciation for his continued support and lobbying on my behalf.
I would also like to record my appreciation for all the efforts that have been made and are continuing to be made to ensure that I can live comfortably while undergoing the necessary medical procedures that are going to be needed to get me back to optimum health. Let us continue to work towards the elevation of the sport and the people who have committed to making us the best in the Caribbean.
