In an effort to ensure high standard of nutrition and provide general nutrition education for the populace, the Public Health Ministry had embarked on a massive nutrition survey last year, Public Health Minister George Norton said.
He stated that the major goals of survey were to create dietary awareness for the population through community nutrition programmes and to monitor the National Food and Nutrition situation, thereby providing useable information for decision makers and other users in the relevant sectors.
“The Key goal in 2016 is to put nutrition on Everyone’s agenda, since it can reduce the burden of care which can result from poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles,” Norton declared, adding that general nutrition education continues at health centres despite shortage of staff.
He explained that the Ministry conducted a nutrition surveillance exercise, nutrition education drive, breastfeeding education and anemia education. He stated that the activities undertaken and achievements had contributed to the progress of achieving several objectives of Health Vision 2020 and the post Millennium Development Goals.
He explained further, that nutrient cost analysis sought to investigate the minimum cost of the food basket required by an individual to meet his/her basic nutritional needs, thereby, accessing food security and the risk for malnutrition at the household level. He added that it also provides direction to policy makers for programme planning and review of minimum wages.
The surveillance, he said, also allowed for the support of a poverty assessments and promotion of affordable nutritious foods by identifying best buys for energy and protein by food groups.
Norton indicated that awareness was raised to enhance healthy food choices at the Albouystown and Parika market square from food prices collected in Region 4 and 3 respectively, adding that some 260 persons benefited from these awareness sessions.
Nutrition assessment, education and counseling sessions were conducted at antenatal, infant & young child, chronic disease and care & treatment clinics at 16 health centres in Regions Three and Four, Enmore Polyclinic, GPHC, NCTC and Palms Outpatient Clinic.
“There were a total of 14, 838 beneficiaries between January 1 and August 31, 2015,” he said.
