A homeless man was yesterday sentenced to serve one month in prison by City Magistrate Annette Singh in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a simple larceny charge.
Roy Singh, a labourer, who has no fixed place of abode, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on Saturday, January 2 on America and London Streets, he stole one packet of soap powder, two hair cutting machines and 24 tooth brushes from a stall belonging to Christine Dookie.
Police Corporal, Adunni Inniss, presented the prosecution facts to the court. Inniss told the court that on the day in question, the defendant approached Dookie telling her that he was sent to uplift bags from her.
The woman then left her stall unattended to query from her husband whether he had sent the man to retrieve items. During her absence, the defendant made off with the items.
A report was made and Police Officers found the defendant in the area. He was arrested and charged for the offence. He initially denied the charge claiming that he empties garbage in the area for a living.
