A labourer who was on remand since last year on an armed robbery charge has to serve another
year behind bars.
Yesterday, Kennard Persaud was found guilty by City Magistrate, Annett Singh in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for the offence.
Persaud, a 27-year-old labourer , who resides at Lot 12 Guyhoc Park, Georgetown had initially denied the allegation which read on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Laing Avenue, while armed with a handgun, he robbed Stacy Mansfield of a gold chain valued $215,000.
The Magistrate found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to one year imprisonment.
Mansfield, who was called as a witness, related the occurrences of the day in question to the court.
According to her testimony, she was at a local shop in Laing Avenue talking to the owner. She explained that sometime later the defendant approached her, held a gun to her head and demanded that she hand over the chain.
Persaud then reportedly snatched the chain and made good his escape. The complainant then made a report to the Police and an investigation was launched. On February 3, 2015, Mansfield spotted Persaud in Laing Avenue and confronted him. This led to a scuffle and nearby Police Officers went to her rescue. The defendant was told of the offence, arrested and later charged.
The Court heard statements of two Police Officers, including the Investigating Rank. Police Corporal Adunni Inniss closed the case of the prosecution yesterday. The defendant was subsequently called on to lead his defence.
However, he chose to remain silent.
The Magistrate told Persaud that the Prosecution had produced sufficient evidence to convict him while pointing out that the months he spent on remand were taken into consideration.
