Former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan has a Tattoo with the digits 53 signifying his ODI shirt number on his arm and the stylish batsman has embark on his first major business venture tomorrow when he officially opens his ‘Fitness 53’ Gym on the East Bank of Demerara between the Providence Stadium and the Ramada Hotel.
Sarwan has 15 Test centuries and five in ODIs and averages above 40 in both formats but he will turn 36 in June and is now looking outside of cricket to maintain his income by becoming a successful businessman.
He will keep the memories of his playing days alive with the name of his Gym which will open from 05:30hrs to 22:00hrs daily. Patrons will be charged a registration fee of $6,000 and $5,500 every month.
The facility includes sections for weights, Cardio, Aerobics, a sauna and a fitness bar for persons serious about their training and Sarwan says it is no coincidence that his Gym and his West Indies shirt are the same.
“I named the Gym `Fitness 53’ after my West Indies ODI number. Opening a Gym was an idea I thought for over five years and I want people to judge the quality it will provide for themselves, but I think you can tell it’s more of a modern kind of gym and we’ve really put a good team together and try and get it up to this standard and hopefully we will be able maintain it and sustain it,” Sarwan said.
“I am a bit surprised that the response has been so great with persons already showing their interest in getting signed up. I think it’s something that I’ve worked very hard to accomplish for the past year, year and a half and I wanted to put it together to offer something to the public so that they will enjoy and of course try and help them with their health and that’s our focus,” Sarwan, who will Captain one of the teams in Unity Cricket t20 match on January 30 at Providence, added.
“I’ve already spoken to the trainers and friend of mine who is in Trinidad and who is qualified and has worked with the Amazon Warriors team during the past couple of years. We will invite him to have a course with us probably within the next month and a half to two months when he gets the time, so we’ve had a couple things planned to enhance our trainers,” continued Sarwan who knows the importance of physically fitness to being healthy since he has personal experience of what it takes to try and stay fit.
“This is my way of helping to develop a fitness culture among people of all ages so we can have a healthy nation and live longer,” Sarwan concluded.
While the Gym will open its doors to the public tomorrow there will be a cocktail Reception and official ceremony this evening.
