Police on the East Coast of Demerara were called out to investigate the discovery of two bodies two miles apart in the Mahaica area yesterday morning.
One body that of 28 year old Hafeeza Rohaman, was discovered in a shallow drain at Helena No. 2, while the body of 61 year old Harrinarine Binda, was pulled from a trench in Hand en Veldt, minutes earlier.
While investigators believe that Binda’s is a clear case of drowning, they will be relying on a post mortem examination to determine the cause of Rohaman’s death.
Yesterday, scores of villagers converged on a dam to get a glimpse of the woman’s body after word got around that a body was found in a drain that services the farmlands.
At first no one knew the identity of the woman but police were recovered pieces of paper with a set of telephone numbers, which they used to contact the woman’s relatives.
Rohaman who hailed from Supply, Mahaica, was described as a troubled woman who imbibed a lot.
She went missing since Friday last.
Family members who were informed that a woman’s body was discovered early yesterday morning were not too surprised when they eventually identified her.
Police say there were no visible marks of violence on the body.
Meanwhile, in the neighbouring community of Hand en Veldt, relatives of the 61 year old Binda are almost certain that he fell into the trench and after suffering one of his many seizures and died by drowning.
Shameer, a nephew of the Good Hope, Mahaica man told this newspaper that Binda, who occupies a room under his sister’s house, left his home early yesterday morning.
“He come out with a bag…normally he does pick up manure fuh people….next thing you know, dem call and seh how dem find he in a trench. Me hear he voice dis morning,” Shameeer said.
Police are continuing their investigations.
