As Guyanese welcome 2016, they must pray for peace and happiness and an end to crime and violence against the elderly, women and children. Guyana has had more than its share of violence and crime, especially armed robberies and murders at the start of the year.
The wider public is hoping that there will be less crime this year and that there is joy on the horizon.
Many are thankful for the election of the new government and are hopeful that it will bring the nation tidings of peace, happiness and prosperity this year and beyond. They are hopeful that 2016 will bring the change that the people yearned; they hope that the races will unite like never before to help in the development of the economy and to improve the quality of life for all.
All should see themselves as citizens of Guyana who will strive to promote peace and harmony under the national motto of “One people, One nation, One destiny.”
The people expect the government to make every effort to end the racial and political strife that has divided the country. And as Guyanese prepare to celebrate the country’s 50th independence anniversary in May, everyone must be involved in the process of healing, uniting and helping the downtrodden and the less fortunate.
This is not the time for the nation to look back but to look forward and the government must lead the way. This is a new year and the government should not and cannot allow race or party affiliations to deny anyone from getting a job or a government contract or sharing in the country’s wealth. The colloquial slang “all awe a one family” should be the mantra of the government and all Guyanese.
After being in power for just over seven months, the government has to come to grips with the reality that the economy is in dire straits, poverty is on the increase and the local communities are struggling.
The problems facing the local municipalities are massive and have been lingering for some time. It will take time to solve them but the government must provide them with the necessary funds to help them develop and strive in 2016. No longer should the local communities be at the mercy of this government as was the case with the last government.
Commonsense must be applied and hopefully good judgment will prevail for the government to devolve more power to the local communities. This should be the government’s New Year’s gift to the nation.
The New Year should bring forth a new approach that will place the country and its citizens among the most innovative, developing countries in the world. Today, it seems as though Guyana is on its way to real change under the new government whose vision is to take the country to new heights never seen before.
However, the success of this vision depends on the government’s ability to develop the economy, strengthen the local communities, improve the welfare of the people and thus create a better life for all, as promised. It also depends on the input of all local stakeholders and the expertise and talents of those in the diaspora who are willing to serve their beloved country.
If the government can succeed in uniting the people, develop the local communities and the economy as a whole, and maintain peace and stability; its probability of getting re-elected could be very high. But many in the government, especially those in the AFC have become arrogant, aloof and selfish and have distanced themselves from their supporters, especially the youths and will likely face the wrath of the electorate in the local government elections. Arrogance, aloofness and selfishness have no place in politics. The people expect their leaders to be moral, humble and trustworthy.
