Eagles soared to the Under-23 Finals of Georgetown’s Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League Friday night with a compelling 64-56 win against Colts at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in a fourth quarter blitz that tied up Colts.
Kevin Higgins scored 17 points for Eagles while Travis Belgrave added 15 points, largely owed to a combined 14-point effort, which helped them outscore Colts 24-15 in the final quarter to come away with the win.
For Colts, guard Jonathan Mangra scored 18 points with Jafar Gibbons pitching in with 15 points and Daniel Haynes eight points. Colts played quality basketball for three quarters before a fourth quarter meltdown booted them from the championship round.
Trailing 40-41 at the end of the third quarter, Higgins finished two lay-ups and a three-point shot while Belgrave finished three layups to seize the advantage for Eagles. The teams traded points, but the Colts were never able to clip the Eagles offensive wings.
Eagles held a 13-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter with Higgins and Kavesi Thompson leading the way. Thompson ended up with nine points for Eagles. However, Colts continued the trod against Eagles’ lead in the second period.
They managed to outscore Eagles 17-16 before halftime to enter the break trailing at 28-29 with Mangra leading the assault with nine points in the period inclusive of a three-point jumper while Gibbons and Amoniki John lent excellent support.
Colts also won the third period before the fourth quarter meltdown sent them packing. Eagles set up a final best-of-three showdown against the winner of last night’s Ravens vs. Pacesetters game. The finals are scheduled to begin Wednesday night at the Sports Hall.
Meanwhile, in the other U-23 game Friday night, Plaisance Guardians defeated the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans 64-56 in their final round-robin game. Terrence Daniels had 21 points and Malcolm Powder 13 points for Guardians.
For UG Trojans, Alastair Lewis scored a game-high 23 points, while Eli Innis supported with 16 points. Trojans seized control of the game in the second, scoring 20 points to head into the break with a 30-24 lead. Guardians reduced the deficit in the third quarter and fourth quarters to record an impressive come-from-behind victory.
