—family does not suspect foul play or suicide
The captain and crew members of trawler Esperanza 110, from which Shahabudeen Haniff fell and drowned
are currently assisting with the police investigation. This is according to a police source.
The body of the 49-year-old man who hails from Lot 191 Meten-meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, was found in the net of a fishing vessel that was working in the vicinity of the Berbice River, on Monday.
The deceased was a member of the crew of the fishing boat that had sailed on December 30, 2015, from a wharf at New Hope, East Bank Demerara for the Berbice area.
His body was brought to shore the same day, landing at the Guyana Fisheries Wharf, Houston, East Bank Demerara.
A post mortem performed on his body last Thursday revealed that he drowned. He was laid to rest the following day.
Haniff’s relatives have not suspected any foul pay or suicide attempt surrounding his death. His sister, Bibi Zamill, told Kaieteur News that her brother left home on December 31, last, for sea. She related that his co-workers picked him up. The woman said that her she received a call last Sunday about her brother’s demise.
“One of the boat men call my brother and told him that he (Haniff) had fell off the boat,” she stated.
Zamill said that she was informed by one of her brother’s crew members that he wanted to return home just after a few days out at sea. She stated that the captain had agreed to bring her brother back to land when he vanished off the boat.
According to the sister, Haniff’s lifeless body was caught in the seine of another boat. She added that Haniff would usually spend nine days at sea without making contact with his family. He has been working on the boat for the past 11 months.
He leaves to mourn two sons, sister, other relatives and friends.
