A well compiled 81 from veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul was enough to see the Guyana Jaguars to a 73-run victory over the Leewards Hurricanes last evening at Warner Park in St Kitts on day two action in the
NAGICO Super50 cricket tournament.
The 41-year-old Chanderpaul batted for 177 minutes faced 129 balls and reached the boundary five times while clearing it once; Anthony Bramble, who made a run-ball 21, put together 54 for the fifth wicket with Chanderpaul.
Veerasammy Permaul slammed an explosive 30 from 14 balls with three fours and two sixes and along with Steven Jacobs, who smashed 19 from 12 balls with a six and a four added 43 for the ninth wicket to help the Jaguars to 219-9 when their 50 overs expired in cloudy conditions on a slow track with some bounce.
Quinton Boatswain (4-54), Odean Browne (2-39) and Daron Cruickshank (2-26) were the main wicket takers for the Hurricanes who were sent back for 146 off 46 overs in reply despite 26 from Chesney Hughes who was run out.
Once Shane Jeffers (2) was caught behind at 5-1 in the fifth over, things got progressively worse when Cruikshank (0) was forced to retire hurt after ‘pulling up’, the Islanders never recovered as left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie took his second consecutive three-wicket haul.
Earlier, the Jaguars left out Kevin Boodie, Chris Barnwell and Romario Shepherd and lost the left-handed Assad Fudadin (5) at 22 when he was dismissed off pacer Gavin Tong in the fifth over.
Vishaul Singh (20) was removed by Cruickshank at 39-2 after hitting three boundaries before Cruickshank also got rid of Skipper Leon Johnson (8) at 51-3 to leave the rebuilding job to Chanderpaul, who is no stranger to these situations.
Raymon Reifer joined Chanderpaul and at the halfway stage the Jaguars were 75-3 with Chanderpaul on 25 and Reifer on nine. But after the Bajan Reifer had added just four more to his score he was LBW to Browne as Guyana slipped to 84-4.
Chanderpaul and Anthony Bramble saw the 100 posted in 32.2 overs before the Chanderpaul reached his 21st Regional 50-over fifty from 95 balls and 73 minutes with five fours and a six as he struggled to score quickly but the important thing for Guyana was that he was still at the crease. He eventually fell in last five overs.
With the sun playing a cat and mouse game above, a gathering of less than 200 watched Bramble depart off Browne as the Jaguars slipped to 138-5 in the 38th over. Royston Crandon and Chanderpaul tried to accelerate the scoring before Crandon (9) was sent packing by Boatswain who also removed Chanderpaul in the same over.
Chanderpaul fell 19 short of what would have been only his second Regional one-day ton. Permaul launched a brutal attack on Tong and clobbered him for fours boundaries in one over including a six before he was bowled by Boatswain who also bowled Jacobs off the last ball as the Jaguars scored 52 runs in the last four overs to compensate for the slow run rate in the middle overs.
The tournament continues tomorrow when the Red Force face-off with ICC Americas at Shaw Park in Tobago and Barbados Pride battle Jamaica Scorpions in Port-of-Spain. In St Kitts, Jaguars oppose CCC Marooners at St Paul’s and the Windwards and Leewards clash at Warner Park.
