Grove Hi-Tech FC of East Bank Demerara were yesterday rewarded for successfully defending their Stag Beer Super XVI football title January 1, 2016 at the Golden Grove ground.
Ansa McAl Public Relations Officer Ms. Darshanie presents the trophy to Grove Hi-Tech Captain Shermon Doris in the presence of individual winners and team representatives.
The team received a trophy and $1.5m at a simple presentation ceremony held yesterday at Ansa McAl headoffice, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara where the runner up, third and fourth placed teams as well as the competition’s Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player and Highest Goal Scorers were also rewarded.
Grove Hi-Tech defeated Ann’s Grove of East Demerara 2-1 on sudden death penalty kicks after regulation and extra time failed to separate them. The second edition of the tournament featured sixteen teams from East Bank, East Demerara and West Demerara Football Associations.
Ann’s Grove pocketed a trophy and $500,000 while Victoria Kings who overcame Mahaica Determinators 4-3 on penalties in the third place match took home a trophy and $300,000; Determinators received a trophy and $200,000.
Michael Matthews of Grove Hi-Tech was given the Best Goalkeeper prize while his teammate Lloyd ‘Badai’ Matthews carted off the Most Valuable Player accolade. Alden Lawrence of Victoria FC, Junior Whitrite and Esan Nelson both of Bearers FC were the tournament’s top goal-scorers with three each.
Speaking at the ceremony, Public Relations Officer Dharshanie Yusuf lauded the organisers for a successful tournament and pledged their continued support. She added that their aim is to lay a solid foundation for football so that it can be played at a higher level. Yusuf stated that she is pleased with the talent and congratulated Grove Hi-Tech on their victory.
President of the East Bank Football Association Franklin Wilson thanked Ansa McAl for their support as well as the players and clubs adding that he is happy Ansa McAl has committed to sponsor the tournament yet again.
