– President Granger
President Granger is resolute that no politician gives operational directives to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) or the Guyana Police Force (GPF). This comment came yesterday even as there are expressed public concerns that there may be political interference in the work of the two agencies.
Questions have arisen following the death of GDF Sergeant Robert Pyle, his wife and another civilian, all of whom died in an accident after a high-speed chase that ended in a fatal accident.
From all accounts officer, Sergeant Pyle was in the process of conducting a reconnaissance mission on two persons whom he believed to be the children of NICIL Head Winston Brassington.
The opposition People’s Progressive Party had accused the government of misusing the security regime for political purposes, but yesterday President Granger was adamant that this was not the case.
The President said that the Police Force and Army have a history of conducting joint operations and that the mission should not come as a surprise.
“As far as I know the SOCU (Special Organised Crime Unit) is conducting some investigations…the request may have come from the police force to the defence force… No politician gets involved in giving operational directives to the police force or Chief of Staff,” President Granger said.
The Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces also responded in the negative, when asked if a probe will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the botched operation.
“The Chief of Staff has examined the information. I don’t think it requires a full probe.”
Former Home Affairs Minister Gail Teixeira has stated that the Chief of Staff of the GDF Mark Phillips and the Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud, have to answer for the death of Sergeant Pyle as well as the two other persons who were killed.
Teixeira had also said that they have a responsibility to say who gave the orders for the reconnaissance mission.
“The GDF and Commissioner of Police have to say if they were tracking Brassington’s daughter, then who gave the orders…what was the interest of a person’s daughter – if you have an interest in a person there are mechanisms to do it, and not chase them down the road.”
She said that while the government has a right to conduct investigations, there are procedures to be followed and in this case, these procedures were apparently flouted.
