City Magistrate Alex Moore released a man on $25,000 bail after he was accused of stealing a bottle of shampoo from Bounty Supermarket on Water Street, Georgetown.
It is alleged that on January 5, Jewan Persaud stole two bottles of body lotion and one bottle of shampoo from the supermarket–all totaling $5,741.
Based on his explanation Magistrate Moore recorded a not guilty plea for the defendant. He was released on $25,000 bail and will return to court on January 28.
Persaud claimed that he bought the items from a man selling on the pavement in the vicinity of the supermarket. He said that on the day in question, he went into Bounty to buy a pack of chowmein to cook.
The defendant alleged that as he was about to enter the place, he was stopped by a security guard who searched his bag and found the items. He stated that the security told him that the lotion and the shampoo belonged to the supermarket and arrested him.
The prosecutor had no objections to bail and informed the court that the stolen items were recovered. Three witnesses are slated to testify when a trial commences.
