– Training compulsory for those seeking certification
In 2015, approximately 7,000 food handlers’ certificates were issued by Meat and Food Hygiene Section of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, (M&CC) to restaurateurs, cooks, chefs and other persons, who work
in food service industry.
The food handlers’ course and certificate programme is relevant to those employed in the food service industry as a means of providing them with knowledge of safe food-handling practices to prevent food-borne illness.
The certificates are usually issued to food handlers after a medical examination and an inspection is conducted by officials Meat and Food Hygiene Section of the M&CC.
Previously, the medical examination was done twice yearly and food handlers’ certificates were also issued twice annually; from 2016 and onward this would be done on a yearly basis.
City Hall‘s Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis explained that persons employed in the food service industry would be required to undergo compulsory training which is geared to equip them with requisite information on food safety and preparation, personal hygiene and food policy.
Additionally, food handlers are required to pay $2,000 to facilitate the process. Lewis noted that Food Handler’s Certificates will not be issued to persons who have not attended the training sessions.
Meanwhile, Chief Meat and Food Hygiene Inspector Deonarine Arjune said that the department reviewed its current operation based on complaints by food service providers and decided to make the necessary changes. He stressed that the examination and educational parts of the programme are important, and further stated that he hopes that the information shared with food service providers would be applied to their day to day operations.
Meanwhile, the Meat and Food Hygiene Section of the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown will commence medical examinations for the issuance of Food Handlers’ Certificates from January 19th to 22nd at the Medical Complex, South Road, Bourda.
