Dear Editor,
I wrote a letter in Kaieteur News on December 11, 2015 captioned, “This country has to treat teachers with a better paying system “. In that letter I asked two questions, “Why is it that teachers were given an increase in salary with effect from July 1, last year?” and “Did the teachers start working from July 1, 2015 this year?”
Based on the budget presentation I learnt that all public servants will be given an increase in salary with effect from July 1. This is a new year and I haven’t seen that increase in my salary. I contacted the Guyana Teachers’ Union. The union’s representatives told me that she questioned the officials at the Ministry on this issue and was told that teachers already received a five per cent salary increase from January.
It is indeed factual that we received a five per cent salary increase from January. Most teachers are oblivious as to what increase they received. Let me make this pellucid, that five per cent increase in salary was bargained for between the union and the previous administration. At that time the now Government was totally against the low salaries given to teachers.
How then can they give the same five per cent increase in salaries to teachers? It’s not an additional five per cent? I was also informed that the union questioned this issue and was told that the Government is the Government of the country regardless which political party is in power. The previous administration bargained for a five per cent salary increase and the current administration who was the then opposition criticized that small increase. In simpler terms, they were saying if we gained power we will give something better. Where is the better increase in salary?
I admit that the Government is the government of the country. However, we are now seeing the skullduggery that the previous administration was a part of. Will this current administration follow this trend too? Since they are the government of the country. I think that phrase was used conveniently. All the other public servants benefited from the salary increase given from July 1. Why are teachers the only exception? I welcome and appreciate the bonus that was given to public servants but we were not treated in the correct manner to be deprived from the increase given by the new administration.
I think this is unfair to teachers. I humbly request the authorities to let this increase be given to our teachers. They deserve it.
Frustrated Teacher
