The dilapidated Stabroek Market Wharf is set to receive a massive upgrade this year. This is according to Town Clerk of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, (M&CC).
During a meeting, yesterday, King noted that among the projections for this year is the plan to start the construction of a new state of the art facility at Stabroek Wharf.
The mall facility overlooking the Demerara River is estimated at approximately $400 million.
The Town Clerk is anticipating that the vendors will not only be happy to occupy a new shopping area but will be happy to pay an extra cost to vend there.
He noted while the plan to start construction of the shopping facility is in the pipeline, there are a number of other projects to be completed in time for the Nation’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations.
Last year, a delegation from the City Council, including Town Clerk Royston King, and a team from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure headed by Minister David Patterson held discussions over the dilapidated Stabroek Market Wharf.
The Minister had expressed empathy over the situation and had reaffirmed his commitment to help the City Council correct the situation at the wharf.
Senior officers of the Works Ministry were subsequently assigned to work with the Council to help salvage the wharf from further deterioration.
The condition of the wharf has been a source of concern for vendors and members of the public alike.
On two occasions, heavy winds caused further deterioration. They destroyed the roof of the wharf, resulting in its collapse.
Vendors, who operate in the area, have continually expressed concern that a section of the dock could come crashing down at any time.
A section of the roof of Stabroek Market wharf collapsed last March. Another area had also collapsed in early 2014, injuring a handyman.
The Town Clerk subsequently held discussions with the Ministry of Public Works and identified an area for the relocation of vendors operating in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market wharf. The vendors are likely to occupy a section of a nearby car park.
