Gonsalves, Dharry for Commonwealth title fights
Boxing buffs still disappointed by the absence of the traditional Boxing Day card may feel somewhat compensated following a recent announcement that officials of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) are planning a power card tentatively set for February 20 next at the Giftland Office Max Liliendaal ECD location.
According to spokesman for the GBBC, Eon Jardine, negotiations are currently ongoing with the management of several Brazilian boxers to have them match gloves with their Guyanese counterparts.
The three Guyanese boxers that are expected to be on show against the Brazilians are former bantamweight champion, Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques, New York based Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) bantamweight champion, Elton ‘The Bully’ Dharry and female boxer, Mandessa Moses.
The card will be headlined by recently crowned jnr/welterweight Fecarbox champion, Dexter Gonsalves, who will match skills with Barbadian, Miguel Antoine for the former boxer’s recently won jnr/welterweight Fecarbox title. Imran Khan, who has recently made his professional debut, will also comprise a part of the card and he is scheduled to match gloves with Barbadian, Ezra Lord.
Meanwhile, GBBC officials said that the fights will serve as warm up for Gonsalves and Dharry who are scheduled to fight for the Commonwealth titles in their respective divisions on May 20.
