Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan celebrated the arrival of the New Year with residents of Region Eight – Potaro-Siparuni.
Minister Bulkan departed Georgetown on the morning of January 1, 2016 and
arrived in the Region within the hour. On the first day he visited Monkey Mountain and Paramakatoi.
The Minister is scheduled to spend one week in the Region. He has visited or will visit several communities, accompanied by Regional Executive Officer, Rafael Downes.
Minister Bulkan intends to listen carefully to the concerns of residents. The following communities on the Minister’s itinerary are Chiming Mouth, Kurukabari, Itabac, Kanapang, Lamana, Kato, Waipa, Sand Hill, Kaibarupai, Kopinang and Chenopai, among others.
In his remarks to residents of Monkey Mountain shortly after his arrival in the Region, Minister Bulkan expressed his pleasure to be among them during their New Year’s celebrations. He also expressed best wishes for the New Year, on behalf of the government.
He told residents that the government cares about all the people of Guyana including those who reside in the hinterland regions. He said that Region Eight is as important as every other Region, including coastal regions.
He said that although this was not his first visit to the villages and communities of the Region, he hopes that he can return before the end of 2016.
Minister Bulkan delivered similar greetings and expressed similar sentiments in the other communities.
He stressed, in his remarks in all the communities that he visited, that each village is part of Guyana and residents of all communities will be treated with respect by the Granger administration. He said that each citizen is entitled to the attention and service they deserve, from the Government. He promised that this will be delivered.
Minister Bulkan noted, as he travelled from village to village, that Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) have the principal role of identifying the needs of their respective regions. He promised central government’s full support to RDCs as they are allowed to carry out their constitutional mandates. He reiterated government’s commitment to decentralization.
In a new development, Minister Bulkan revealed that Village Leaders are now being invited to attend meetings of the Regional Democratic Councils, unlike what obtained in the past.
Shabakie Fernandes, the local representative of “Caring for Others Inc” (CFOI), was invited by Minister Bulkan to accompany him. Her Atlanta-based charitable organisation donated several articles of clothing to be distributed during the trip, as part of a collaborative effort between the government and CFOI.
Fernandes accepted the invitation.
