The Georgetown Mayor and City Council, (M&CC) will be moving to take control of a number of vacant lots across the city, especially if these have become environmental hazards.
The first exercise has been conducted on Main Street, Cummingsburg, Georgetown.
Kaieteur News understands that the decision to seize empty lots was taken after the Council observed that there are a number of unattended spaces in different wards of Georgetown.
According to information disseminated by M&CC’s Public Relations Department, the unattended areas have become eye sores. They are often covered with overgrowth and weeds.
The overgrown lands provide an ideal setting for reptiles and mosquitoes to live. In some cases, residents have converted these lots to communal dump sites. Additionally, the Council noted that the environment is said to be a haven for the criminal minded to pounce on unsuspecting citizens. As such, residents who live nearby are forced to clear the lots themselves due to the environmental and safety threats.
“A yard that is unkept is a contravention of the Public Heath Ordinance,” the statement outlined.
According to the Public Health Ordinance Chapter 145; the owner of all lots shall keep them free from overgrowth of bush, weeds and long grasses.
Further, the Public Health Ordinance Chapter 145 section 66 (-1) states that “The owner and occupier of any premises shall at all times keep his premises free from refuse tins, bottles coconut shells, calabashes, bush, weeds and long grass. Keep trimmed, within reasonable number to the satisfaction of the local sanitary authority and free from the breeding or harbouring of mosquitoes, all fruit or other trees, shrubs, hedges and plants of the like nature”.
The Council has commenced cleaning those lands. This would add to the cost incurred to the rate of such property owners.
If the owner cannot be located the Municipality would be approaching the Courts to seek legal intervention in the matter.
Also in cases when the landlords for the lots cannot be found, the Council will take necessary action to safe guard the integrity of the environment.
Meanwhile, the Georgetown M&CC will be continuing efforts to repossess lands belonging to the Municipality. The committee has since reclaimed the Lamaha Street Railway Embankment. This area is earmarked for a special Municipal project; which would be of benefit to all citizens.
Town Clerk, Royston King has noted that the Council has an environmental health responsibility to all citizens of Georgetown to ensure that environment is conducive to live and work.
