Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is reporting an alleged incident in which a female engineer attached to the company was verbally abused by a customer during the execution of her official duties.
The engineer, attached to a programme involving the installation of a transmission main in the Turkeyen community, East Coast Demerara, was accosted by the customer who hurled several insults including referring to the GWI employee as a “waste”.
The customer has been identified as Cecil Rajana.
“The GWI Engineer indicated that Rajana provided no reason for his verbal attack but continued to refer to her in a derogatory manner. The incident occurred in the presence of other members of the Turkeyen community as well as GWI employees,” the company said in a statement last evening.
The female professional involved indicated that she is emotionally distressed following the incident since Rajana’s comments were unprovoked.
Upon hearing of the incident, Chief Executive, GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles indicated that he was appalled to hear of the attack on the GWI employee.
“I expect more professional behaviour from the customer involved,” stated Dr. Van West-Charles. “We will not condone such attacks on our employees.”
GWI said it intends to conduct an investigation into the incident.
