Yesterday, a father of one was placed on bail after he made an appearance before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of assault.
Marvin Sommersaul, 25, a vendor from Lot 36 First Avenue, Bartica, is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Orin Persaud on January 3, at First Avenue Bartica.
Sommersaul pleaded guilty and asked to offer an explanation. The Magistrate placed him on $75,000 bail after entering a not guilty plea. He has to make another court appearance on January 7, next.
Sommersaul, who was not legally represented, told the court that on the same day in question he went to Bartica to do business at his shop. While he was sleeping he was awakened by a sound. He said that he saw Persaud pushing the door. He then picked up a pipe and hit the defendant on his hand.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne made no objections to bail and told the court that the defendant is currently hospitalized.
