An East Canje man and his granddaughter are now homeless following a fire of unknown origin, which destroyed their two-storey home at Lot 1103 New Area, East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice.
Chunilall Basdeo, called “Ears”, 61, a former employee of the Rose Hall Estate and a former taxi driver lived at the residence with his 10-year-old granddaughter. The inferno, which began around 11:00 hours on Sunday, reportedly started in the upper flat of the building.
According to Basdeo, he was alerted to the blaze by his granddaughter, who told him that she smelt something burning.
Upon checking, they noticed smoke coming from a bedroom in the upper flat of the house. But by the time they raised an alarm and summoned help, the fire was already spreading rapidly.
When the fire service arrived the fire had already consumed most of the upper flat of the house.
Basdeo, who is reportedly unwell, stated that he is at a loss to explain how the fire started. He said that due to his illness, the upper flat of the house was unoccupied, since he can hardly climb the stairs.
Basdeo, who is temporarily staying at his brother’s residence at Palmyra East Canje, estimated his loss to be in the millions of dollars because his house was well furnished with almost everything inside.
According to Basdeo, he usually sustains himself by planting a small kitchen garden and selling some of the produce.
The Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Police Force are conducting investigations.
